5 REASONS YOU SHOULD TRY WINTER HIKING

When the temperatures commenced TrekupIndia to drop and snow caps shaped on the mountains, I notion our trekking could input an off-season. However, Ryan and I each quick realized that iciness trekking gives even greater amusement, undertaking, and breath-taking views.

Even if you don’t live close to mountains, you can locate trekking trails in your location. So don’t live internal all wintry weather—take advantage of nearby trails to attempt wintry weather hiking.

Five Reasons You Should Try Winter Hiking

Be additionally practice caution and protection when hiking in iciness. Avalanches, frostbite, and ice pose severe threats. Do not hike in excessive climate, get dressed as it should be, and be aware about trail situations.

WINTER EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
Opting outside in wintry weather can help alleviate seasonal have an effect on ailment, raise your immune system, and save you that cooped inside worrying feeling that includes wintry weather. Spending time with your pals and family even as reaping the advantages of fresh air and exercising also presents a more healthy alternative to binge-watching Netflix all weekend lengthy. Hiking is fun for the entire circle of relatives (such as your pets), so package up, seize your equipment, and head for the trails!

5 Reasons You Should Try Winter Hiking

YOU STOP PERCEIVING WINTER AS A NEGATIVE
Up until this year, I hated iciness (you understand you’re from the Midwest whilst…). Winter supposed snow, bloodless, and ice, and I focused on those negatives as opposed to playing the season. Winter trekking has taught me that snow can be amusing, the proper clothes can triumph over the biting bloodless, and that focusing on the positives makes the bad parts of winter greater bearable.

YOU ENJOY A WINTER WONDERLAND OF NATURAL SCENERY
Snow transforms a lovely wooded area or mountain pinnacle into an ethereal wonderland. A peaceful and picturesque view of the woods or a lake protected in snow is really worth miles of hiking thru deep powder.

I think pics carry greater meaning than phrases, so here’s a current favored iciness trekking photograph to demonstrate simply how terrifi the surroundings can be on iciness hikes. (for greater, follow me on Instagram!).

Five Reasons You Should Try Winter Hiking

WINTER HIKING IS GENTLER ON YOUR BODY
Sometimes trekking leaves me feeling fatigued and sore. The pounding in opposition to rocky terrains for hours will motive my ft to pain and my legs to quack. The tender floor of snow (even compacted snow) provides extra cushion for your frame; it’s like running on a smooth dirt path as opposed to walking on tough concrete. Winter hiking thus affords a top notch way to build your trekking fitness without the equal soreness as on-season hiking, which means that that you’ll be prepared to hike farther and higher when the snow melts.

HOT FOOD AND WARM DRINKS TASTE EVEN BETTER AFTER A COLD HIKE
Whether you choose warm chocolate, warm buttered rum, or mulled wine (my personal favourite), a warm drink after hours of trekking in the snow is likely one of the maximum satifying gastronomical studies. The best contrast I can make is how top a burger and fries flavor after a tough race.

So now which you’re satisfied to hike outside in wintry weather, how do you competently and enjoyably achieve this?

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE CONDITIONS
As you climb better, the temperatures drop, so you need to be organized for temperatures at least 10 stages less warm than on the trailhead. However, don’t bargain how insulating snow can be and what sort of the exertion can boost your middle temperature! Layers, in particular merino wool, technical layers, and down vests and jackets, will help you live heat without overheating.

Be prepared to alter: I normally put on technical layers and a vest for hiking, and stash a down jacket and further gloves in my backpack. We forestall at least two times a hike to exchange our layers, but it’s higher than sweating (which can then cause you to sit back) or shivering.

In addition to tools consisting of gloves and a hat, sunglasses are a ought to-have for winter hikes! The solar can pondered off the snow so brightly that you battle to see simply, and it’s miles crucial for secure trekking to be able to see the entirety on your direction.

For extra recommendations, reference my guide on what to wear for hiking in bloodless weather.

5 Reasons You Should Try Winter Hiking

INVEST IN OR RENT CRAMPONS OR SNOWSHOES
Even compacted snow is slippery and calls for traction past that of hiking boots or trail shoes. Crampons will offer more tractions for your toes to help you competently navigate throughout the snow without slipping. Affordable options encompass Yaktrax Pro traction cleats (associate hyperlink), which slip over your hiking shoes and can also be used for winter jogging.

However, in case you hike frequently, don’t forget making an investment in more durable microspikes, along with Kahtoola Microspikes(affiliate link), or snowshoes. Both of those will offer greater traction and resist the wear and tear of wintry weather hiking. Snowshoes especially are useful for hiking via deep and powdery snow and venturing off-trail. Microspikes are ideal for hiking in compacted snow; you can put on them in deep snow, but (as we found out this weekend), you will likely still sink into the powder from time to time.

Five Reasons You Should Try Winter Hiking

PACK PLENTY OF WATER AND SNACKS
Despite the cold weather, you still need to hydrate nicely at the same time as hiking. Many hikers choose bladders that slip internal their backpacks (similar to Camelbacks for strolling) so they don’t want to prevent, retrieve their water bottle from their bag, and typical make hydration extra hard. Trust me after I say that hydration bladders make hiking ten instances extra enjoyable and less complicated.

Hiking additionally burns a giant amount of energy, especially in bloodless climate. Eating during a hike will now not simplest hold you feeling energized, but it’s going to additionally hold you feeling heat as your body. PB&Js are my preferred hiking meal, particularly due to the fact they are simple to percent, clean to devour even as trekking, and the fats within the peanut butter is so gratifying.

Great trekking snacks along with natural granola or nut and seed bars, nuts, organic jerky, or wholesome cookies like fig newtons or selfmade oatmeal cookies. Pack greater snacks than you will think you need, as the mixture of the cold weather and extended exertion from transferring inside the snow will growth your appetite.

SLOW DOWN
Hiking is not a race. Be cautious, plan your steps based on the terrain, and keep your stability at all times, especially on steep or slippery segments. Slowing down may even help you revel in the scenery!

I think that any time you’re thoroughly prepared, you set your self up for a hit amusement of some thing comes your way. Even in perfect conditions, in case you are uncomfortable, you’re going find a cause now not to like what goes on.
I will say that final night time we watched The Revenant, and they may be basically performing some extreme winter hiking (instances 1000) and all I ought to consider was how glad I was to be in Mexico, lol.
